Is it necessary for a woman with an irregular menstrual cycle and a negative pregnancy test to undergo an ultrasound?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took an I-pill within two hours after the intercourse. My pregnancy test is negative, but two cycles have been missed. What precautions should I take? Is it necessary to undergo an ultrasound?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have mentioned Primolut-N (Norethisterone) as your current medication. How long have you been taking this? It is better to check a blood pregnancy test. I suggest you stop taking the tablet. Undergo full treatment for any problem you have. Have a healthy diet. Go for a walk daily or exercise regularly to have a normal BMI (basal metabolic rate). Consult your doctor before taking the medicines. If the blood test comes negative, there is no need for a scan, but the pregnancy test would be positive if something is missing in the history. You will need a transvaginal scan.

The Probable causes

The probable causes are medications or hormonal intake.

Investigations to be done

You should undergo a beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test.

Preventive measures

I suggest you stop taking the tablet Primolut-N (Norethisterone).

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
