What is the management for mitral valve prolapse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a rapid heart rate, experience palpitations, and have high blood pressure. I have been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and am currently taking Amitriptyline, Fludrocortisone, and Propranolol.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

This is most likely related to pheochromocytoma, anxiety, panic attacks, or essential hypertension. A pheochromocytoma can also cause resistant arterial hypertension, which can sometimes be life-threatening, as this type of blood pressure is often not controlled by common blood pressure medications. It is advisable to consult your doctor for blood tests, such as metanephrine levels, and to consider thyroid screening, as hyperthyroidism may present with similar symptoms. Additionally, practice relaxation techniques, minimize stress, and seek a second opinion from a cardiologist to ensure patient safety, as this is always our top priority.

Thank you for consulting me.
