Can I stay active and independent long term with MS at age 45?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at 45 after experiencing numbness and vision problems. Thankfully, my symptoms improved after treatment, and most days I function normally.

However, whenever I read about MS online, I come across stories about disability and loss of independence, which scares me. Can someone diagnosed with MS at 45 still remain active and independent long term?

I enjoy hiking, traveling, and living on my own, and I constantly worry about whether those things will still be possible ten or twenty years from now.

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand why reading those stories would be frightening, especially when you are thinking about your future and the activities that bring you joy and independence.

The encouraging reality is that many people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in their 40s remain active, independent, and engaged in the things they love for many years, and often for decades after diagnosis.

MS affects each person differently, so it is not possible to predict exactly how the condition will progress for any individual. However, advances in treatment over the past several decades have significantly improved outcomes for many people by reducing relapses, limiting disease activity, and slowing progression. The fact that your symptoms improved after treatment and that you are functioning normally most days are both positive signs.

Continuing to work closely with your neurologist, following your prescribed treatment plan, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and addressing any new symptoms promptly can all help support long-term function and quality of life. Many individuals with MS continue to hike, travel, work, live independently, and pursue personal goals well into the future.

While it is natural to worry about what may happen years from now, your current experience does not mean that disability is inevitable. Focusing on what you can do today to protect your health and well-being can help you maintain both confidence and independence, while giving you every reason to remain hopeful about the future.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Please feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or support.

Thank you.
