Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am experiencing nausea and have been taking Domperidone 10 mg twice a day for the past year. All test reports were normal, and the endoscopy revealed a slight hiatus hernia. When I tried to stop taking Domperidone, the nausea returned. I find relief from nausea by taking Domperidone twice daily. However, I have read that long-term use of Domperidone may have adverse effects.
Could you please advise if it is safe to continue using this medication long-term for my persistent nausea?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
You are most likely experiencing functional nausea syndrome, which originates in the brain and cannot be explained by other stomach conditions. Domperidone is a symptomatic medication, meaning it alleviates nausea without addressing the underlying brain reflux circuit responsible for it. While taking Domperidone is generally safe, I recommend trying Amitriptyline (Amitriptyline hydrochloride) 10 mg at night for at least three months. This may help manage your symptoms more effectively over the long term, potentially providing lasting relief. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with take the medicines with their consent.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
If Amitriptyline does not work, is it acceptable to continue taking Domperidone?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The reason for this is that these medications are not intended for long-term use. Unlike antihypertensive or antidiabetic drugs, which can be used for extended periods, these medications are not suitable for lifelong use. Amitriptyline (an antidepressant) may help alleviate your symptoms, so it is worth trying.
Thank you.
