Is it normal for a newborn to sleep for more than 18 hours?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My newborn baby is sleeping the whole day. He sleeps more than 18 hours. Is this normal?

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is an absolutely normal behavior of a newborn. They may sleep even twenty to twenty-two hours per day. Nothing to worry. As the baby grows, the duration of sleep decreases accordingly. So, keep your baby warm and feed every second hourly.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for replying.

What does keeping the baby warm mean? Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Keeping warm means covering the baby properly and not exposing it to cold surroundings like directly putting the baby under a fan or air conditioner. If the baby is not warm, it may develop some issues like not feeding well, dullness, etc.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
