Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The ulcer on my tongue hurts a lot while I eat and talk, especially when my tongue touches my teeth. I am seeking an overnight solution for this, ideally just to get relief for tomorrow. I have a school presentation scheduled for tomorrow, and without being able to talk, I will not be able to present my project. If a complete cure is not possible, I just want to minimize the pain while talking during tomorrow's presentation. I usually get mouth ulcers once every month or every other month. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am sorry to inform you that there is no overnight solution for a mouth ulcer. Mouth ulcers typically heal on their own within one to two weeks. In the meantime, here are some tips to help manage the pain:

  1. Avoid spicy, acidic, or salty foods that may irritate the ulcer. Stick to soft, bland foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or applesauce.
  2. Use a saltwater rinse (half a teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of water) to soothe the ulcer and reduce inflammation.
  3. Apply a topical anesthetic like Benzocaine or Lidocaine to the ulcer to numb the area and reduce pain. Follow the instructions on the label carefully.
  4. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing directly over the ulcer to prevent further irritation.
  5. Consider using an over-the-counter pain reliever like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen to help manage the pain.
  6. Get plenty of rest and avoid excessive talking, as this can further irritate the ulcer. If possible, consider practicing your presentation with a friend or family member who can read your notes for you.

I hope I have answered your question.

Thank you.
