Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a mild overbite, and it is getting harder and harder to close my mouth, looking like a chipmunk. I am 15 years old and want to get it treated, but my parents advised me to wait until I am 18 because there are some health hazards. So should I wait for another three years, or is it acceptable to get it fixed at my age?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There are not so many age restrictions nowadays regarding orthodontics treatment. It can be initiated as early as seven years and done as late as 40 years. But, of course, it depends on the severity of the malocclusion to be addressed. At 15 years of age, you can undergo orthodontic treatment and get your smile and facial esthetics corrected. People tell you to wait till 18 years because of the eruption of wisdom teeth, which can take place from 17 to18 years up to even 25 years. However, wisdom teeth can be addressed and taken care of depending on the situation. Therefore, I suggest you undergo the treatment at this stage, and if required, you can get a wisdom tooth extracted later, around 18 years of age, based on its situation. Do reach out for further information or clarifications. Have a nice day.
