Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a PAP smear last week. Today I received the result that said I was HPV-negative. Still, later I received an email from the gynecologist: “The lab, unfortunately, could not process the PAP smear results due to excessive cervical mucous and lubrication that was in the specimen per their report - this is not necessarily a problematic result. But unfortunately, we do need to ask you to come in again to repeat the PAP smear in about four to eight weeks after the cervix has had enough time to regenerate some cells for the PAP smear. I apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, this can occasionally happen with the PAP smears.“ I am very anxious about this. Does this mean my PAP smear was abnormal, or I may have cervical cancer?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I have reviewed your reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Your report is negative for any carcinoma and pathology, so there is no need to worry about it. There is no HPV (human papilloma virus) also. However, are you having any symptoms like vaginal discharge and itching?

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

No, I do not have any itching. However, the gynecologist said they needed to repeat the pap smear because the lab could not process it due to excessive mucous and lubrication. This is why I am anxious that I may have cervical cancer. Does it mean my pap smear is abnormal? Please see the email from the doctor attached.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Excessive cervical mucous could be due to hormonal changes, excessive cleaning of the vagina, and changes during the menstrual cycle. If you do not have any symptoms, there is no need to worry about it. It could be a normal finding in your case, and it is not due to cervical cancer. In the case of cervical cancer, you may have symptoms like irregular vaginal bleeding, excessive vaginal itching, and discharge (usually brown in color). Again, your excessive discharge could be a normal finding and not necessarily an abnormal finding. So please do not worry about it and repeat your test after four weeks. Also, are you menstruating, or have you achieved menopause?

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I had my last period two years back, so I believe I am in menopause now.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

One time last year, I was with my husband sexually, and he was using his finger inside my vagina for a long time. We do this many times, but this one time, there was a streak of bright blood when I went to wipe. Then it disappeared, and there was no blood again. We again had sexual intercourse a few days later, and no blood. This is also why I am very scared.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Maybe blood could be due to scratches by your husband's finger. However, if it is persistent, then it will be an issue.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
