Can worm infections cause chronic health issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am taking Mebendazole for worms. My doctor does not know what worms they are, and I wonder if they may have contributed to some chronic health issues. I have a picture of the worm I had in my stool and was looking for guidance in diagnosing what it might be.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your case history and the attached pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). It seems to be a small roundworm infection or ascariasis. You can submit your stool sample for microscopic examination and determine the exact type of worms. Do you have exposure to animals like pigs or agriculture-related work exposure to soil and fertilizers?

To identify whether it has caused some chronic health issues, you need to undergo an overall health evaluation and a review of your complete blood profile for anemia.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I grew up on a farm with horses and other animals. I think that may be the cause of this infection.

Thank you.

Follow general precautions like hand hygiene and avoid direct exposure to soil and animals.
