How long will it take for a tooth abscess to subside?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a broken tooth that has an abscess on the gum. I have been taking Amoxicillin 500 mg for three days. However, the abscess has not been drained, and I still have a lump on my gum. Will the antibiotics make the pus drain out into my mouth? How long will it take?

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The abscess is related to the tooth. Maybe it needs root canal treatment. If you go for it, then ask the dentist to drain it. Antibiotics only subside the lump. At last, you need treatment. Also, you can use saline water and a baking soda mixture to rinse the mouth to subside it. It takes at least a week to cure, or sometimes more time is taken according to severity.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
