Can stress, hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, and lifestyle changes cause irregularities in the menstrual cycle?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period was delayed by ten days, and when it finally arrived, I only experienced a small amount of blood clotting, which I noticed on my pad. This light flow continued for a week, and I did not even need to change my pad throughout the day. I am unsure why this is happening since it is the first time I have experienced it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Several factors can contribute to changes in your menstrual cycle, including stress, hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, medications, illnesses, and lifestyle changes. It is not uncommon for women to experience variations in their menstrual flow occasionally. A delay of a week in your period can be attributed to various factors, such as hormonal fluctuations or increased stress levels. Sometimes, the uterine lining may take longer to build up, resulting in a delayed and lighter period. It is also possible that this particular cycle differed for reasons unrelated to any underlying health issues. Observing small blood clots during your period is relatively normal. These clots can form when blood coagulates in the uterus and then passes through the cervix. The amount of bleeding can vary from person to person, and it is not uncommon for some women to experience lighter flows where they do not require to change their pad frequently.

I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.
