Can PCOS cause an irregular menstrual cycle or heavy bleeding during periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a polycystic ovarian syndrome. I did not have any period since last month. This month, I got my period, starting with some spots that I did not know even filled one pad a day, then gradually changed to heavy bleeding. After two weeks, it stopped. After four days, I got a heavy period again, filling out a pad in just three to four hrs.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

When did you have your last blood investigations and scan done?

I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. First, start iron supplements immediately to reduce the chances of anaemia.
  2. Take tablet Tranexamic acid 500 mg and tablet post an eight hourly for two to five days as per requirement for heavy bleeding.
  3. Start tablet Primolute N 10 mg twice daily from day 5 to day 24 to regulate cycles and to avoid excessive or irregular bleeding for 3 cycles.
  4. On the day of menses second day, menses have hormonal blood tests (serum testosterone, prolactin, serum insulin, progesterone, FSH and LH, thyroid function test, and complete blood count) done.
  5. Have a healthy diet with less salt, sugar, oil, and spice.
  6. Practice exercise, walking, and yoga.
  7. Collect laboratory reports and discuss them here.
  8. Have normal body mass index and weight.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
