Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old woman, and I have been dealing with PCOS. Recently, my doctor informed me that I am also in the prediabetic stage and need to be mindful of my diet. I would appreciate more detailed insights and recommendations regarding dietary changes for diabetes prevention. I am concerned about the possibility of developing this condition at a young age, especially since my parents were diagnosed later in life. Despite my father's diligent adherence to a healthy diet, regular tests, and prescribed medications, he suffered a heart attack and passed away two years ago. This experience has made me skeptical about the effectiveness of diet alone. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

PCOS(polycystic ovary syndrome) increases the risk of diabetes, but lifestyle changes can be effective.

I suggest the following

  1. If overweight, prioritize weight loss, as excess body fat contributes to PCOS and insulin resistance.

  2. Ensure 30 minutes of daily exercise and adopt a protein-rich diet, limiting carbohydrates and fats.

  3. Avoid processed foods, sugars, and high glycemic index items like ice cream, pasta, potatoes, and white bread.

  4. Include plenty of vegetables, moderate fruit intake, and enhance dietary calcium with berries.

  5. Opt for low-fat milk.

  6. In prediabetes, where glucose tolerance is impaired, lifestyle changes can prevent the progression of diabetes.

  7. Steer clear of sugars.

I hope this helps.
