Can pregnancy or fetus be seen in the second-month abdomen ultrasound scan?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can a pregnancy or fetus be seen on an abdominal ultrasound scan in the second month of pregnancy? If six pregnancy tests are negative and nothing is seen on the abdominal ultrasound scan, is pregnancy still possible?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As for your query, there are two things you need to know:

1. After unprotected sexual intercourse or the breakage of a condom, there could be a chance of pregnancy, depending on ovulation. In an ultrasound, you will be able to detect pregnancy after five to six weeks of gestation.

2. As you said, pregnancy tests are negative. In early pregnancy, there is a chance you may not get an accurate result.

Suppose you missed a period by the expected date, and there is sexual intimacy with your partner. Then wait for a week and do a urinary pregnancy test, preferably a morning sample of urine. Sometimes in early pregnancy, you might get false positive results, which, after a week, if you repeat, you will be able to confirm.

If you miss your period, then wait and repeat the urinary pregnancy test after a week, preferably a morning urine sample. Since you had done it six times and it turned out to be negative, I do not think you need to be worried.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

An ultrasound scan was done for the abdomen, and it was normal, but I could not see my uterus since my bladder was not full, and it had been three months. I had not gotten my period, and the last one was three months ago, and I took six tests in the previous week, and they were negative.

Can you please confirm? Can I really not be pregnant?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As you said, your last period was three months ago, and now it has been almost three months since your last period. When was your last sexual exposure? Is that exposure unprotected or protected? As you said, you had done consecutive pregnancy tests, which all turned out to be negative.

Since all six tests came out negative, it is good. If at all pregnant, it might have come positive. If it is not reflecting, then there is no need to worry. Just be relaxed and cool, and do not be in a panic.

You should have done a scan when there is a full bladder. When the bladder is full, we can see the pelvic organs, like the uterus and ovaries, are clearly visible. I do not think you will be pregnant from the query that you posted because all six pregnancy tests came out negative. Since you last had a period three months ago.

If you have not had a period by this time, the scan will definitely pick up the gestational sac. If it is detected, it will be nine to ten weeks. Still, if you have doubts, I suggest you repeat the test tomorrow morning, preferably the morning sample. Suppose it is negative, then good.

And moreover, if it is negative, then we need to rule out other causes for a delayed period, like thyroid issues, PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) related, or stress-related issues. If you are comfortable, do send the image of the kit after doing the test at home.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
