Do abnormal LFT levels in pregnancy harm mother or fetus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is 35.5 weeks pregnant. I am uploading two consecutive LFT reports with a gap of nine days. Kindly suggest food alternatives for reducing ALP, bilirubin, SGOT, and SGPT. She is taking iron supplements, calcium, and Udiliv 300 twice daily. Is there any threat to the fetus and mother from the LFT report results? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your history and attached laboratory investigations (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It is common to have deranged LFTs (liver function tests) during pregnancy. Most of the time, it is related to pregnancy, called pregnancy-related liver disease, which resolves after delivery. Her current medications are fine. My suggestions will be to avoid all hepatotoxic medicine or avoid using the tablet Paracetamol if possible. Add syrup Hepamerz (L-Ornithine L-Aspartate) two tablespoons twice daily. Get an ultrasound abdomen to see the overall liver status and rule out underlying liver disease and fatty liver. Recheck LFTs after every two weeks till delivery. Do not worry about alkaline phosphatase; it comes from pregnant women's liver, bones, and placenta. There is no specific food to improve LFTs. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
