What are the consequences of water breaking at 31 weeks of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 31 weeks pregnant. I have a history of previous C-section. Now, the water broke out and I have been administered with steroids, Tocolytics and IV antibiotics. Then, my MFM admitted me to the hospital. However, the doctor has not decided to perform C-section even with period like bleeding and contractions every three minutes for almost four hours straight. I am curious as to know why they are not performing a C-section. I am very concerned that the risk of staying pregnant is outweighing the benefit. Kindly give your opinion.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As you had a preterm premature rupture, you have received steroids. It is always safe to wait for the action of the steroids. This will help the baby's lung maturity. You are in a hospital under proper supervision, so relax; there is nothing to worry about. They are the best people to take the decision. You and your baby will be safe. Hope you have a safe and healthy delivery.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I was given the steroids over a week ago so that they have time to take effect. I have started feeling that it is more dangerous to keep the baby inside, than the risks of being born prematurely on 31 weeks. How can I relay this to the doctor? I feel like they need to just take the baby out now before something more serious happens.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is very easy to talk to a doctor and get your concerns cleared. It is always better to open up and talk. Just have a word with your gynecologist and pediatrician. Ask them your queries and the reason for them to continue with the pregnancy even at such high risk. Hence, you will be assured that you and your baby are in safe hands. Also, tell the things that are bothering you. I am very sure that there is some important reason for which they are continuing the pregnancy. I am pretty sure that they will definitely help you out.
