Why am I suffering from premature graying of hair?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 19 years old. I am suffering from premature greying of hair. I started to have it two to three years back. Earlier, they were just only two to three numbers but now I have more and more greying of hair every month. I have tried applying amla, Shikakai powder, and ritha powder on my head. Still, I am applying it to my head. After waking up every day, I can see one more grey hair on my head.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Premature greying of hair occurs due to multiple causes. The most common cause is genetics. If any of your parents started to have grey hair earlier, then there is a high chance for you to have grey hair earlier than them too. The other causes are vitamin deficiencies and hormonal causes. I suggest you do some tests to rule out the cause. Timely correction helps to reverse the process in a small fraction of people. In the majority of cases, it is an irreversible process and it needs cover-up. You can use henna. You can continue having a concoction that suits your hair and it does not cause harm to your hair. Try to rule out the cause. Take medications or applications for the first two to three months for having improvement. If your condition improves, then you can continue using it.

Investigations to be done

Do CBC (complete blood count), thyroid profile, ferritin levels, and vitamin B12 levels.

Regarding follow up

Have a follow-up with your reports.
