Will medicines help in treating prostate swelling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father-in-law has prostate swelling. The doctor wants immediate surgery, but I want to wait and see. His PSA was 7.87 ng/mL, the blood and urine tests were normal. In the ultrasound, the weight of the prostate was 1.4 ounce. Is surgery drastic in this case? Can he use medicines and alter his diet first? Thanks so much.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

What are his symptoms? Does he have a poor flow of urine? Does he have to strain? Was uroflowmetry test done to check for urine flow? Just for prostate enlargement, surgery is not required. Treatment is based on the above reports. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for replying. Yes, his main symptom was poor or no urine flow. He did not have a fever or anything else. He uses a catheter. It is difficult to consult a doctor in my country, and the cost is too high. I do not know where to get good care. Please suggest medicines. Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It seems his symptoms are severe, as he used a catheter for urine. I suggest you try using tablet Veltam plus (Tamsulosin 0.4 mg and Dutasteride), once a day in the morning for 15 days. After two days of starting this tablet, remove the catheter and see how he improves. If the symptoms do not improve or he has urine retention, then he will require surgery.

Thanks.
