Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yesterday I bought an RO (reverse osmosis) filter, and the shopkeeper had a dog in the shop. He touched the dog and then gave the filter to me. And today morning, the mechanic changed the Ro filter, so I am worried about what if there was dog saliva and he set those filters in RO. So I am worried about what if the rabies virus dissolved in water. Is it fine to drink the water?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the description you gave, there is little reason to worry. Rabies gets transmitted by bites, scratches, and in case if licks in wounded, open areas from animals infected with rabies. By your narrative, the dog was touched and seemed to be a pet dog, which might have been vaccinated. Even if not vaccinated, the dog does not appear to be rabid. Assuming, in an unlikely scenario, the dog does have rabies infection, and the dog did not bite or scratch, or wound-licked the owner or you. It is highly unlikely to transmit rabies through saliva into RO (reverse osmosis) water purifier.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I am worried that if the packing of the filter had dog saliva and the mechanic opened it and fixed it in RO with those hands, I am afraid also, I have Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), so is this my intrusive thought or anything else? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As per the WHO (world health organization), People are usually infected following a deep bite or scratch from an animal infected with rabies, which is, in 99 % of the cases, a dog. Transmission can also occur if the saliva of infected animals comes into direct contact with mucosa (For example, eyes or mouth) or fresh skin wounds. Contraction of rabies through inhalation of virus-containing aerosols or transplantation of infected organs has been described, but is extremely rare. You have little or no chance of contracting rabies from the dog as the mode you mentioned does not support its transmission.

Most importantly, the dog needs to be rabid and unvaccinated. Please confirm with the shopkeeper once so that you are not always under self-suspicion. For general rabies protection, take the following recommended pre-exposure prophylaxis dosages of rabies vaccine. Two 1.0 mL doses of rabies vaccine are given IM, one injection per day, on days 0 and 7 in the deltoid area of adults.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I already took ARV (anti-rabies vaccine) doses four months back, and If the shopkeeper says that the dog is vaccinated, then is there a need to worry or not?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If you have taken ARV (anti-rabies vaccine) doses, please send pictures of the vaccination records. If you are vaccinated, you are unlikely to be needing to worry about the dog's vaccination status.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I have no record, but I took all four doses of 0.5 ml according to the immunization date.Does RO filter the rabies virus, or do I have to plan to change those filters again?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Since you stated that you had taken all doses of rabies vaccination, there is no need to worry. As far as changing the filter is concerned, you may do as you, please. There is minimal or no risk of such a transmission, based on the information provided till now.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
