Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

How long does a rabies virus survive outside the host? I stepped on a dead bird and I am just a little paranoid. There are no symptoms at present and was wondering what my risk of exposure would be. Kindly advice.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The rabies virus is fragile under usual temperature and humidity conditions in summer. It is destroyed within a few minutes at temperatures greater than 122 degrees farenheit or 50 degrees Celsius. It survives no more than a few hours at room temperature. The virus is no longer infectious once the material containing the virus is dry.

In scientific studies, the most prolonged survival of the virus was recorded at the temperature of 5 degrees celsius. At 30 degrees celsius, combined with intensive sunshine the virus gets devitalized within 1 hour 30 minutes. In contrast, the virus remained active, at 30 degrees celsius, after about 20 hours if the sunshine was not present.

As described by you, you are less likely to contract the rabies virus merely by stepping on a dead bird. I hope you have washed your legs and feet with soap and water after that instance. Rabies affects only mammals. Mammals include humans, bats, dogs, cows and livestock, wild predatory animals, whales, etc. Birds, snakes, and fish are not mammals, so they cannot get rabies and cannot give it to you. I hope your doubts are clarified.

Kindly revert if you have more queries. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

So in outside environment, it will not live for more than a few hours? Like on my shoe while walking around?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com

Yes as mentioned earlier, the rabies virus is unlikely to be alive for more than 24 to 48 hours. But rabies affects mammals mainly so unless the bird was a bat or bitten by an animal with rabies, it does not appear to be a cause for worry. I hope you had cleaned up your shoes and leg with adequate soap and water. However, if rabies is prevalent in your community and you were bitten or scratched by a rabid mammal, it is best to take prophylaxis.

Thank you.
