Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 16-year-old male with a receding hairline and I fear it will get worse. What do I do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

The receding hairline may be due to multiple factors like family history especially from the maternal side which may be genetically inherited, due to travel and changes in climate exposure, due to hormonal fluctuations, dietary factors, dandruff issues, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies, etc. It is important to find out the reason behind it if there is no family history.

I suggest the following-

1. Blood tests including vitamin B12, vitamin D3, S. Ferritin, and TFT (thyroid function test) to rule out any vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

2. Multivitamin tablet containing biotin can be consumed after dinner for three months.

3. High protein diets like egg whites and protein powder also help with enhancing hair growth. Mix one tablespoon of protein powder in one glass of skimmed milk and consume in the morning daily after breakfast for two months.

4. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) scalp treatments may be considered in which 2 to 2.5 teaspoon of your blood sample will be used to extract nutrients from your own blood by spinning it in a centrifugal machine and injected back to your scalp using a small syringe. They are done once every month for six months at a dermatologist's clinic. They help with hair growth stimulation, reducing hair fall, and overall betterment of hair.

5. Anti-hair fall serum can be applied on a clean dry scalp at night, kept overnight, and washed off in the morning. Use it continuously for a year; it will help in hair growth stimulation.

I would also request you provide an image to assess the severity of the hair loss so that I can provide more management options depending on the same.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
