Is redness around the nipple indicative of breast cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have attached an image of a tiny redness around the nipple to the left. Any idea what this could be? Do you think it could be anything sinister?

It is not growing in size and shows no additional signs of breast cancer. I have had it for about eight to ten weeks and have not gotten any treatment. I also had a chest CT scan approximately a week later for another condition, and nothing was detected. Would a chest CT scan reveal breast abnormalities? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I looked over the image (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Breast USG (ultrasound imaging) is performed to confirm any abnormalities in the breast. Furthermore, chest CT (computed tomography) scans typically reveal lung abnormalities rather than breast abnormalities.

If a breast USG seems suspicious, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan of the breast can be performed. It could be a simple blister. Also, it would be best if you first tried taking antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. And after a week, you can get an ultrasound of the breast.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I will try medications for a week, and better to be sure. I suppose it is hard for you to say without a physical check. It maybe has reduced a little for the last few weeks. I have attached a picture of what it was like last week as I have decided to monitor it over the last few weeks. Also, I am going through perimenopause and would like to know if hormone fluctuations cause issues like this.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

This lump does not look cancerous. Such changes are quite common. Hormonal changes can cause this. Still, you can get a breast ultrasound done. It does not look serious.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Can I ask you what a dimpling of the breast is? Does this look like this? Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Dimpling of the breast can sometimes be due to cancer. For this, you should get an ultrasound of the breast done. A breast ultrasound can tell whether there is an irregular lump behind the dimpling. If yes, then a biopsy will be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I would like to know one more thing, although this is possibly not related, I want to ask anyway. I have been lifting an old dog lately. Could this cause it, although my breasts were not exposed?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is definitely possible. I looked over the image (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It looks like a normal lesion. There could be some pressure on the breast. And this might have caused it. It does not look cancerous. Still, a breast ultrasound will make it more clear.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
