Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a root canal on my 31 molar. Only a corner of my tooth was removed, not even half. I am concerned about the cost of the crown which I know could be very expensive even with insurance. Is it possible this can be filled with a simple filling instead of a crown?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read through your complaint and the relevant details.

Crown placement after root canal treatment will happen once the tooth is particularly shaped and prepared for it. It is also followed by an impression making of that shaped tooth. If this step has been done, then you are definitely going to have a crown. If not, it is the root canal treatment which has just got completed (I am saying this because you had mentioned only a little portion of the tooth is removed). Answering the last part of your question, yes a simple filling can be done instead of a crown for a root canal treated tooth, but there are few conditions for it. It depends on how far the tooth is opened up for the root canal treatment, that is, the depth of the cavity and the extension. Since it is a molar tooth, we do not want to risk your tooth undergoing a fracture in the later days. So, a crown is always advisable. I request you to always ask your dentist which part of the treatment plan is going on and what is next. It is your right to question. You should not be signing the consent just like that but know what is happening actually.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
