What is the best treatment for scabies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My family suffers from something that causes us to itch. We were advised to use a cream for scabies or mites. But it did not help us. I think that it can be a yeast or fungus or even white piedra or trichomycoses. We have itching and some white pimple-like bumps all over our bodies. Our urine smells weird and we have some white-colored crumbs all over the body. Some of them have terrible peeling on the scalp with tiny white crumbs. Our snot is sticky and it gets constantly stuffed up. What is the cause? How to get relief?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your family members have similar symptoms at present. It indicates scabies. As you have tried using creams for scabies, I am willing to give oral medication to your family to have some relief. Wash all your clothes and sheets used on the bed every day. All of them have to be cleaned and rinsed properly. Wash them separately. They have to be washed with soap or powder that contains sulfur. I am willing to give antihistamines have some relief. Hair problems can be managed by using medicated shampoos. It helps to clear mites lodged in hairs. Please mention whether your family members scratched their skin a lot. They need to take antibiotics to reduce the chances of having secondary infections. Kindly send pictures of skin that is scratched a lot to guide your family members better. Initially, when you start taking medications, you can have some increase in your symptoms. But it can get decreased soon. Your family members have to take steroid creams for topical application, antibiotics for the scratched skin, Ivermectin for the treatment of scabies, and antihistamine drugs to reduce symptoms of itching.
