What are side effects of Semaglutide with thyroid cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am considering compounded Semaglutide for weight loss, but have a complicated history with thyroid cancer five years ago and severe pancreatitis last year that put me in the hospital for 11 days.

My primary doctor seems hesitant to discuss it. Would these compounded injections be safe with my medical history? My sister mentioned there is a specific risk for people with pancreatitis. What side effects should I be especially watchful of, given my conditions? My endocrinologist is booked for three months.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Researchers found that Semaglutide caused thyroid cancer in rodents. This was not seen in human studies. If you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, you should not use Semaglutide.

Semaglutide injection may increase the risk that you will develop tumors of the thyroid gland, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC; a type of thyroid cancer).

The probable causes include being overweight. The probable diagnosis is overweight.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
