Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife delivered a baby on the 8th of last month. On the 13th of this month, we had unprotected intercourse. The delivery was a normal delivery. My baby was formula-fed for the first two days as my wife did not have milk and now, is completely on breastfeed. Is it possible that she could get pregnant again and is it possible to avoid the same?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

During the first few weeks after delivery, ovulation is unpredictable. Ideally, until six weeks there is no chance of pregnancy, but only if totally breastfed. I suggest she get a serum beta hCG test done.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

My wife is breastfeeding the baby from two days after the delivery. The baby is now completely breastfed with no formula being provided. Is there still a chance of pregnancy? Can any measures be taken right now to prevent pregnancy?

Answered by Dr. Meeta Bansal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

In that case, there is no chance of pregnancy. But still, I would suggest she take an emergency contraceptive pill if you do not want to take a chance. It is perfectly safe to take it during breastfeeding. But, in the future take precautions beforehand.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
