Can food allergy cause stomach cramps?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a question regarding food intolerance. I have never had a food allergy, as far as I know. However, I experienced severe tooth pain and a fever. It was an infection in my tooth, but I got that cleared from the dentist. A few days later, I experienced tongue-tingling and a white coating. Sometimes, the coating would be yellow. Before all of this though, I had stomach cramps every morning, and I always put it down to my anxiety. My tongue-tingling and raised papillae have never left since, and it has been three months.

I struggle with tingling, soreness, and dry mouth every day for at least 70 % of the day. I noticed I may have a food allergy after I started developing a rash a few weeks ago, sometimes my skin would be itchy, and I would have no rash either. I also suffer from loose stool, sometimes with mucus, this has been ongoing for about five months, I also have severe brain fog and fatigue sometimes. I am 23 years old and overweight but not obese. I rarely eat fruits and vegetables and I eat a lot of rice, noodles, meats, bread, etc. Could it be a food allergy or an intolerance?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A toothache may cause fever. SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) or enteric fever may cause a coating over the tongue. Irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption syndrome, food intolerance, or obesity may also present like this. Avoid fatty food, alcohol, cool drinks, and ice creams. Get an ultrasound of the abdomen to rule out fatty liver, complete blood test, and fasting lipid profile. Take a tablet of Pantoprazole before breakfast for one week. If symptoms are not improved, please review with reports or consult with your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
