How to treat swollen lips allergy safely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having big rashes every night that disappear in the morning. Sometimes, I wake up with a swollen lip. I went to the hospital, and they gave me an allergy injection, Promethazine, and Prednisolone tablets.

The rashes stopped when I stopped taking the drugs. Now they are back. I am a 21-year-old female.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This is a condition called urticaria. That can be acute or chronic. There can be different reasons for urticaria, like infections, drugs, or certain things in our food, like additives, etc., that can cause it. Most of the cases are idiopathic, that is, the reasons are not known.

The most important thing in its treatment is to look for trigger factors that are causing it, like the type of food you eat. Certain foods like eggs, meat, junk food, etc., can cause it, as well as taking any drugs, etc. Oral antihistamines are the mainstay of treatment, and we can increase the dosage of them if not cured. Topical application of steroids with Calamine lotion is done to have symptomatic relief.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
