Can a accidental hit cause swelling and rash on face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was accidentally hit in the face by a teammate in volleyball. It was not that bad, and no immediate bruising but the left side of my face felt mildly swollen. The next day as I kept touching it, it flared up and broke out in a rash on the whole left side of my face. Is it possible that it was a reaction to the hit? Anti-histamines do not seem to be working. What can I use? Is Cortisone safe on my face for this type of rash?

Hi,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

I have gone through your case. In my opinion, you should not take it lightly. Either see the doctor in person or send a picture as the face is very sensitive part of the body and you may need a course of oral antibiotic. And in this case, antihistamine has no role. There might be a collection of blood, or it could be just soft tissue trauma. I am prescribing you medicine also but follow my above advice too:

  1. Tablet Ibuprofen 400 mg two times a day.
  2. Take capsule Amoxicillin 500 mg two times a day.
  3. Mix Fucidin cream with Hydrocortisone cream and apply on your face sparing eyes.

Thank you for consulting me.

You can always reach me at icliniq.com.
