Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My throat is very sore, but I tested negative for strep throat. I had sex for the first time in years five days ago, and now I am paranoid that it could be a sexually transmitted infection.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
A sore throat occurring a few days after sex does not automatically mean you have a sexually transmitted infection, and anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder can understandably make it much harder not to catastrophise symptoms after intimacy.
Since your strep test was negative, many common viral throat infections, irritation, allergies, dry throat, reflux, or even anxiety-related body focus are still much more common explanations.
If you had oral sex, certain sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea can occasionally infect the throat, but they often cause either no symptoms or only mild sore throat symptoms rather than severe classic illness.
The timing alone does not prove a sexually transmitted infection. Reassuring signs would include the absence of fever, pus, swollen neck glands, rash, genital sores, or unusual discharge.
If the sore throat persists, worsens, or if you had unprotected oral exposure with a new or high-risk partner, then throat sexually transmitted infection testing, especially for gonorrhoea and chlamydia, can be considered for reassurance.
Otherwise, supportive care such as hydration, warm fluids, salt-water gargles, rest, and monitoring symptoms is reasonable for now.
Let me know if you had oral sex during the encounter, and if you are having any other symptoms, such as fever, swollen glands, rash, or genital symptoms. Kindly provide detailed information for further guidance.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
