What are the reasons for my intermittent sore throat, and why does it worsen at night and upon waking up?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

It has been a month actually. I was feeling all good until four weeks back, and suddenly my husband got a fever for a day. The next day onwards, I was feeling unwell, just throat pain. Sometimes on the upper side of the throat, sometimes on one side or the other. I consulted a general physician first; he said it is an infection. I had medicine for a week's time from the general practitioner. Still, I did not feel any change, so I went to a senior ENT specialist, and she said I am having acute pharyngitis. I had medicine for a week's time. And after two days of completing the course, I feel it again. The medications I had are Amoxprl CV 625 mg, antiseptic for gargle, Pancare, and Delcon plus. I followed food control, as the doctor suggested. So the doctor said may be it can be a reason too and nothing much to worry about. Yesterday, I went to a gastroenterologist, and he asked many things, but I had no symptoms of anything related to a stomach ulcer, he thinks. And yes, I do not feel any other problems other than this throat pain. I can see cobblestones too, and my throat pains. The gastroenterologist gave me Nexpro 20, Restmil 0.5 mg, and Mortega. All I feel is post-nasal drip, mucus is going at times, and cobblestone is there. The pain comes and goes, not too much, but at night it increases the pain. The pain is also there when I wake up. I sent a video to an ENT specialist, and he said it is granular pharyngitis. I need to confirm this actually. I needed to raise my voice today, just singing for five mins, and after some time sore throat came again. I am mentally feeling so low as this is not going away. I am not a smoker, but most probably when my husband smokes, I take a maximum of five to six puffs. And it is been a month. I quit smoking as this started.

Kindly help.

Hello,

I am delighted to welcome you at icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Sorry to know the suffering you are going through. I will try and help to the best of my ability. As your pictures show, there are not many abnormal things that can be seen. There is a bit of lymph node hypertrophy at the back of your throat, which is pretty normal. Definitely, you do not have an infection as you did not have a fever during these episodes of throat pain. I feel you are a bit anxious after your husband got unwell. Rest assured, do not worry; the condition you might be going through is called globus pharyngeus. Please read about it; there is nothing to worry about.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have pain while swallowing saliva and while drinking water or anything. It is not intense pain, but it is difficult. However, there is no pain while eating food. It feels like itching, scratching pain, and I feel mentally uneasy too. I hope this is not cancerous. Can you please explain to me what could be the reason, and how I can treat it at home? I breathe through my mouth while I sleep, which makes it feel more dry and causes pain when I wake up from sleep. I am trying to close my mouth. Please let me know in detail.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The snoring is another factor that causes dryness of the throat and increases pain, especially early in the morning. So, the snoring has to be brought down by weight loss, losing your belly fat. You surely do not have cancer or a tumor, so do not worry. A simple warm gargle should reduce your pain to a certain extent.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
