Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
For the past three weeks, I have been experiencing continuous pain in my right shin. Initially, the pain subsided, but it returned accompanied by swelling.
I also feel a 'creak' when I extend my ankle forward and backward. The area does not appear excessively red. I work in retail, and I am on my feet constantly.
I am moderately active most days and do not have much time to rest. I am currently under Fluoxetine, Bromazepam, Quetiapine, and Oxycodone.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
The pain, swelling, and creaking sensation when you extend your ankle forward and backward could indicate several possible causes. Here are a few explanations:
Shin splints: Shin splints are a common overuse injury that can occur due to repetitive stress on the muscles and connective tissues surrounding the shinbone. They typically cause pain along the inner edge of the shinbone. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with reducing activity levels and using supportive footwear, are usually recommended for shin splints.
Stress fracture: A stress fracture is a small crack in the bone, often caused by repetitive stress or overuse. It can result in localized pain and swelling. Rest is crucial for the healing process, and in some cases, a splint or cast may be necessary.
Tendonitis: Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon, which can cause pain, swelling, and a sensation of crepitus or "creak" when moving the ankle. Resting the affected area, applying ice, and avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain can be helpful. Physical therapy or stretching exercises may also be recommended.
Ankle sprain: An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn, often due to an inversion (rolling) injury. Swelling, pain, and difficulty moving the ankle are common symptoms. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation are generally recommended for ankle sprains. In severe cases, immobilization with a brace or splint may be necessary.
Given your occupation with you being on your feet and moderately active, it is possible that the pain is due to overuse or repetitive stress.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you for consulting me.
