This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am feeling more stressed. Does hearing news regarding patients of COVID-19 through social media increase the chance of having depression or anxiety? Does lockdown cause stress or anxiety?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you keep hearing news related to COVID-19 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), it increases your anxiety. Even lockdown plays an important role in causing anxiety and depression. During a lockdown, there is financial and social impairment. You can not go out to meet a person or to talk with anyone personally.

You stay in your place with limited food and resources. Many people suffer from loss of jobs and business. So it affects the mental status of a person leading to anxiety or depression. There is a guideline to treat your anxiety or depression. It will help you definitely. You should do exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes.

Do walking. You should do meditation for 20 minutes daily. Sit in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts. You should eat healthy home-cooked foods and avoid junk foods. You should spend quality time with friends and family daily.

You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, learning new skills or language or musical instruments. You should have enough sleep of 7 to 8 hours daily. You should avoid taking tobacco or alcohol or any substance abuse. Live your life and do not just spend it. Be bold and confident. Stop scrolling on social media. Use mobile for a limited period. If your symptoms persist even after following this advice for 4 to 6 weeks, then you can start taking medications for a short duration.
