Is it necessary to use sunscreen in winter?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I know sunscreen is a summer essential, but is it necessary in winter, too? Can you explain how ultraviolet (UV) rays can affect the skin during colder months, and should I still be prioritizing sunscreen in my winter skincare routine? I want to make sure I am taking the right steps to protect my skin throughout the year.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, sunscreen in winter is crucial too. UV (ultraviolet) light is still there. However, since the sun's rays or heat are less than in summer, we tend to relate it to UV radiation. Be it the rainy season, winters, or cold weather, one needs to use sunscreen reapplied every two hours. If you reside in mountains or hills, you need as much sunscreen as you would apply usually or more than that, which can be reapplied every two hours, depending upon your skin type. I suggest you follow a skincare routine, which is in the following order: Cleanse, tone, moisturize, sunscreen, and makeup (optional). Choose a product based on your skin type. Some gadgets provide you with a UV index on different types of days. Generally, 11 AM to 2 PM is the most crucial time when you should not skip sun protection, even when you are swimming outdoors.

I hope this helps.

Revert in case of queries.

Kind regards.
