Is activated charcoal effective for teeth whitening?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is activated charcoal effective for whitening teeth? I see that it is very popular in other parts of the world, while it is still gaining momentum here.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I do get many queries related to activated charcoal. There is neither absolute indication for its use nor evidence for its benefits. I suggest you start with a minimal amount at first. You may try it once or twice a day and continue using it if you get a favorable result for about three weeks. Discontinue immediately in case of an allergic reaction.

Thank you.
