Do STIs cause pain and discomfort with slight swelling in the testicles?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have pain and discomfort in my right testicle. I think it has slightly swollen (not sure). I am not sure if it is a sexually transmitted infection or something different. I had STI three years ago, and I hope it is not that again. I was taking a tablet Cipro. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Pain in testis can have many causes like infectious and non infectious. One is STD (sexually transmitted disease) or even urinary tract infection others like varicocele hydrocele or hernia. If you got recent sexual intercourse and you got urinary symptoms like urethral discharge or pain passing urine then it is infections. If no urinary symptoms then it is unlikely to be infection. I suggest you to do undergo US (ultrasound) for the scrotum, STD screen, and urine analysis and culture.

Please follow up with investigations to help me diagnose and decide on treatment options for you. If you have any more queries please let me know.

Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have no pain while urinating. I have pain behind my right testicle and right below my waist above the right side of my scrotum.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This is likely to be varicocele and requires ultrasound for diagnosis and grading so we can decide on the type of treatment. And no need to do urine culture or STD screening then. Please follow up with USS (ultrasound scan) result. If you have any more queries, please let me know.

Kind regards
