Can thalassemia be inherited from parents?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a thalassemia non carrier, and my partner is a beta thalassemia carrier (HbF: 1.0 %, Hb: 12.4 g/dL, and HbA2: 5.1 %). I am worried about any chance of non-pregnancy and want to know the treatment for the same. I also want to know about the medical measures that are needed during pregnancy. Is it true that a thalassemia beta carrier can donate blood? If so, then would the donor's blood (beta carrier) be affected or contaminated by the recipient's blood? Kindly suggest the required clinical measures regarding my concern.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to offer my professional insight into your medical issues.

I want to appreciate the awareness regarding your health.I have gone through your reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) and according to the history, you are not having thalassemia and your partner is having beta thalassemia minor. So you do not have to worry about that. Beta thalassemia will not lead to problems in conceiving. If both parents are thalassemia minors then during pregnancy active intervention is needed. You can have a child with beta thalassemia minor but your child can live a normal life without needing blood transfusion as beta thalassemia minor is a heterozygous state. If the hemoglobin level of the beta thalassemia donor is greater than 12.5 mg/dL then he or she can donate blood without any adverse reaction on the recipient.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
