Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have done several blood tests, and they all show thyroid dysfunction.
I have been gaining weight and do not understand why.
Can you look at my blood work and help me find a solution?
I was on Accutane (Isotretinoin) for six months and stopped after that.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is normal, which is the most important and accurate test of the thyroid function tests. However, I do not understand why FT4 (thyroxine) is slightly low. I understand from your question that these tests were done to determine why you cannot lose weight. I would like to know the following:
You probably have normal thyroid function, and my recommendation is to repeat the TSH and Free T4 (thyroxine) after two months.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have done three blood tests. Yes, my problem is the weight. I do take multivitamins. I do not have any medical conditions. My cycles are irregular. I am not regular with bowel movements. I do not have headaches. I wear spectacles, so I do not have vision issues either.
I recently have been getting eczema. I spoke to my dermatologist about it she says it has to do with my hormones most probably and asked to get a thyroid test done. I want to get to the bottom of this.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
You have normal thyroid function. TSH came out normal twice. A slightly low FT4 (thyroxine) is better to evaluate patiently. I recommend continuing an aggressive diet and exercise program to lose weight. Do not worry about the laboratory test. Some things are better evaluated slowly. If we rush, we will do unnecessary tests and cause even more anxiety. Please be patient. Hold the multivitamins for a week and repeat the TSH and free T4 alone in a standard laboratory.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply. This helped a lot.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
It is good to see that both TSH and free T4 are normal. Your thyroid function is also normal. I believe you are taking two supplements. I cannot comment on them.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I have not started taking the supplements yet. I wanted to know if I can. They are pre and pro-biotics.
Is there anything else?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
You can take them. Many of the nutraceuticals provide placebo effect only. I usually prescribe vitamin D and B12 (for diabetes patients) only. Pre and pro-biotics are prescribed only when antibiotics are prescribed or when someone have a vague gastrointestinal symptoms only otherwise not.
Weight loss is a slow and persistent process. Keep working at diet and exercise. You can check the TSH and free T4 levels after three months.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
