Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 56-year-old woman. I am going for a holiday. I have been experiencing some unexplained symptoms which I suspected are related to an overactive thyroid. Last week, I had a private ultrasound which showed a small nodule. I also had some blood tests done and I have just received the results.. My thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is 0.01, T3 is 8.2, and T4 is 39.2. I am feeling quite scared. I cannot see an endocrinologist until next week. Is it safe for me to go away tomorrow until I can see someone to start some treatment?

Hi,

Icliniq.com welcomes you.

I understand your concern and will try my best to give you all the answers in a very easy and clear manner.

From your symptoms and blood results (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity) it seems you have overactive thyroid. You may need some further tests to check if it is thyroiditis or if your thyroid gland making more hormones. It can be autoimmune, meaning your body is making some proteins against the body itself, leading to the thyroid gland to making more hormones. Sometimes, it can be just the inflammation of the thyroid gland only. Do you have any eye signs or symptoms? Hyperthyroidism can lead to anxiety, nervousness , menstrual irregularity, and weight loss.Going out without treatment may not be a good idea in my opinion but it depends upon your symptoms intensity. To be on the safe side, I would advise you to first be seen by an endocrinologist and start treatment. Usually, it takes two or three weeks to control symptoms and get back to baseline.

There are three options for treatment

  1. Medication.

  2. Radioiodine.

  3. Surgery.

That will be discussed on confirmation of your diagnosis. I hope I was able to give you some details about your issue.

Thank you.

It was truly a pleasure to have you at icliniq family.

I am warm-heartedly thankful to you for giving me the chance to help you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is it safe for me to go on holiday today and see the endocrinologist when I get back next week? I already have Propranolol for palpitations anyway.

Answered by Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If you feel your symptoms are controlled with the medication you started. I think it would be fine and see an endocrinologist after a week on your return.

Regards.
