Will intratympanic steroids help for severe tinnitus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 25 years old. I have severe tinnitus due to initial noise trauma for a month. Nobody in the emergency helped me. Can I have intratympanic steroids? I was prescribed Prednisone and Lorazepam. After tapering Prednisone, I hear the noise louder.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the concern, tinnitus is a perception of a ringing sound. It is of two types. They are subjective and objective. Subjective tinnitus is heard only in patients. The objective tinnitus is heard by both doctor and patient. Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom of other underlying conditions. There are various causes of tinnitus. Exposure to loud sound, wax, sensorineural hearing loss, trauma, ET (eustachian tube) dysfunction, Meniere's disease, and acoustic neuroma are the other causes. It is necessary to know the cause for the treatment. In your case, it can be due to eustachian tube blockage as you have a history of nasal polyp. You can take tablet Levocetirizine 5 mg one tablet a day at night for two weeks. You can use nasal drops Oxymetazoline 0.005 percent three drops three times a day for seven days. You can take tablet Betahistidine 8 mg three times a day for seven days. Try to ignore tinnitus by playing music, watching television, or talking with others. As you have tinnitus for a month, it is better to get examined by the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist. You can treat tinnitus by doing tinnitus retraining therapy, and intratympanic Dexamethasone. It helps to relieve tinnitus. Antianxiety drugs can be taken for anxiety.
