What could be the slight bulge on the tonsillar wall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a slight bulge on my tonsillar wall which is different compared to the other side. Should I be worried? It is not a different color.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the pictures. (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You are having chronic tonsillitis. There is an enlargement of tonsils. No other abnormality is there. So you can relax. Please tell me what symptoms are you having and what medicines have you been taking so far? So that I can suggest you better. Follow up with the required information.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Can you see the little bulge on the right of the tonsillar pillar? It has got a tiny bit that is circular and the other side is completely straight. That is what is concerning me. I am not on any medication.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is a cyst and is normal. Grossly there is nothing to be worried about, but if you have any problem in swallowing or any increase in the size of the lesion than get it biopsied. Use Hexidine gargles and take tablet Vitamin C once daily for a week.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

It has been there for a while. Does that change the advice? It is also the same colour as the rest of the pillar, so is it definitely a cyst?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is definitely a benign lesion it appears. I would still advise you to be relaxed. If there are any changes in color or appearance then it should be investigated. If you still have any doubts you can get it excised and get its histopathological testing done.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

If you were my consultant would you take it out or just leave it be? I appreciate you allaying my fears.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would definitely leave it as such only and would advise you to visit me if any changes are seen.
