What causes sharp pain in the tooth after a dental filling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had two deep fillings a few days ago. Two days later, I started having minor toothache and sensitivity. Nowadays, I am getting occasional sharp pain and it lasts just for a second. Is this normal?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As the cavity was very deep, the pulp of those teeth might be infected. If the pain increases or some swelling arises, then show it to the dentist as soon as possible. Such teeth might need root canal treatment. If the sensitivity and pain are very mild, then it may be due to the material used for filling, which emits heat for one or two days till it gets its maximum strength. Usually, such pain will go off in another two days.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
