Are mood changes associated with antidepressant addiction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For 20 years, I have taken the tricyclic antidepressant desipramine intermittently for significant depression. In the past, I could go off the medication when I no longer needed it, but over the last year, I have noticed that when I increase the dose, I feel more depressed, and when I decrease it, I feel less depressed. I feel confident that I no longer require the drug and have gradually withdrawn from it. However, I have noticed that every evening, right before I would take the medication, my mood significantly declines, leading me to believe that my body craves it. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

As you continue to take antidepressants, their effects may become less noticeable, and your body might develop tolerance to their benefits and side effects. To stay safe, avoid adjusting the dosage on your own. Always take the medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you need any changes, consult your doctor first. If you are experiencing mood swings or not feeling the expected improvements, it could be due to the medication becoming less effective. In such cases, it is essential to get proper evaluation and advice. Do not hesitate to discuss these concerns with your psychiatrist for further guidance.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
