What does raised thyroid-stimulating hormone levels mean?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My doctor recently put me on 75 mcg of Levothyroxine. My TSH with reflex then jumped up from 9 to 43 m[IU]/L. Normal range is 0.36 - 3.74 m[IU]/L.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Sir, your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) value is very much high from the upper limit of the normal range. You have mentioned you are currently taking 100 mcg of Levothyroxine. You should continue this dose to bring your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level to the normal physiological range. I would like to ask what medical symptoms of hypothyroidism are you having. What are your FT4 (free thyroxine) and FT3 (free thyroxine) values? Usually, hand tremors occur in hyperthyroidism.

Clinical features of hypothyroidism include:

  1. Tiredness.
  2. Weakness.
  3. Dry skin.
  4. Feeling cold.
  5. Hair loss.
  6. Difficulty concentrating and poor memory.
  7. Constipation.
  8. Weight gain with poor appetite.
  9. Dyspnea.
  10. Hoarse voice.
  11. Menorrhagia (later oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea).
  12. Paresthesia

Please follow up if you have any further related queries about it.

Regards.
