How can I stop fishy smell coming from my vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

About two weeks before my most recent period, I began to get a fishy smell from my vagina. I wash it everyday using Vagasil. So, I was confused. Once my period came, the smell went away and I thought it was gone for good. But, the day after my period ended, the smell was back, but it was a rotten smell, not a fishy one. I am currently on my third month of the birth control pills called Aubra. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the smell, but I figured it was necessary information. What I really want to know is what can be the cause of this and how can I get rid of it?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have not mentioned your detailed menstrual, gynecological, medical, drug history, etc., or any disease you have been treated for. First of all, it is better to have a vaginal swab to check which pelvic infection this is. Notice any symptoms you have along with this vaginal discharge like fever, itching, abdominal pain, vomiting, etc. Follow up with the report of the vaginal swab. After sending the sample to the lab, I suggest starting:

  1. Tablet Doxycycline 100 mg 12 hourly for seven days.
  2. Tablet Metronidazole 400 mg eight hourly for seven days.
  3. Have a healthy lifestyle, exercise, nutritious food.
  4. Avoid recreational drugs and alcohol.
  5. Wear comfortable, soft, cotton undergarments.
  6. Maintain good hygiene.

Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicines with their consent.
