Why am I vomiting and dizzy after starting a new medicine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been using tuberculosis medicine for the last five months, along with thyroid and blood pressure medicines. A few days before, the doctor gave me sugar medicine too because my sugar level is high. After using that medicine of 1000 mg, I have started vomiting, going to the bathroom frequently, I feel dizzy, and it is hard to speak. What happened to me?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your description, your symptoms sound concerning and may be a reaction to the new sugar-lowering medicine, especially if the dose was started at one thousand milligrams right away. Many diabetes medicines, particularly Metformin, can cause stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and weakness when started at a high dose. When these symptoms are severe, they can lead to dehydration and low blood pressure, which can explain why you feel dizzy and have difficulty speaking. Because you are already taking tuberculosis medicine, thyroid medicine, and blood pressure medicine, there is also a possibility of drug interaction or the combined effect of multiple medicines lowering your appetite and fluid levels.

Vomiting and frequent bowel movements can make you dehydrated quickly, which can worsen dizziness and cause your blood pressure to drop. In some cases, if the body cannot tolerate Metformin, it can also trigger a rare but serious condition related to acid buildup, so persistent vomiting should never be ignored. Right now, your symptoms are too strong to be considered normal side effects, and you should not continue to feel this unwell.

I need to know the exact name of the new sugar medicine you were given and whether you were told to take it once daily or twice daily. Also, tell me whether you are still vomiting, whether you have a fever, and if you can drink enough water. If symptoms are ongoing, especially dizziness and trouble speaking, you should seek urgent medical care because dehydration or low blood pressure can become dangerous.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
