Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism two years ago. I got radiation to kill my thyroid and now I cannot lose weight. I am active and I eat relatively healthy. I can't lose weight at all, no matter what I do. I am so discouraged. I am also taking 150 mcg of Levothyroxine. What to do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

Since you have a slow basic metabolic rate due to current hypothyroidism, it takes double the effort of a normal person. Do not lose hope as you are doing just fine but you must remember you cannot lose weight over a short time.

Keep a target of reducing just 1 kg per month. Try to take a low-calorie diet of 1200 -1500 kcal per day. Keep a diary and write down your food, the calories you consume, and how much you burn. There should be a deficit of 500 kcal to lose half a kg per week. Try walking for an hour for five days a week. Cut down on sweet drinks and sugar. Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day. Make all these things your lifestyle. Gradually you will notice a good change. Don't expect miracles overnight.

Hope you find my advice of some benefit.

Thanks and regards.
