Hi doctor,
I hope you are doing well.
I wanted to ask you about the safety of taking whey proteins long-term. I have been taking whey protein (50 g per day) for the last six months and have seen great benefits due to it.
However, recently a family friend who is a doctor cautioned me against using it long-term as it leads to kidney damage.
I wanted to take the kidney expert’s opinion. Please let me know if I should continue to use whey protein. I am not able to meet my protein requirements via diet as I am a vegetarian.
Thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have seen your query regarding a protein diet. Total protein intake for you will depend upon your goals. If you are trying to gain weight and muscle building, then protein intake of 1.6 grams per kg body weight which would be around 130 grams per day will be enough. The total protein intake in a day has to be taken into consideration. Since you are taking whey protein of 50 grams and if you add to the protein in your diet, the total should be around 130 grams per day. This much protein intake is the same in a healthy person. So as long as you are healthy and do not have any kidney issues you can take 130 grams of protein without any problems. Also, whey protein is a good protein to take. Avoid taking other types of protein.
Thank you.
