Why do I have cheek pain after extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my lower wisdom tooth removed a month ago. It was infected and they said they had to break a bone and take it out. I had two stitches removed post 10 days of my surgery. Still, I have sensitivity and light pain in the cheekbone area. Is this normal to have? How long will it take to cure?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

After wisdom tooth removal, one generally has pain and little difficulty in chewing for a week or so. But, it has been a month now and it should not be there. Is there sensitivity on the cheeks or the adjacent tooth? If it is on the tooth, you need to check for any cavity in the tooth adjacent to the wisdom tooth removed, or during the time of removal of the wisdom tooth slight luxation to the adjacent tooth can occur that is also normal.

This can lead to a sensitivity in that tooth for a few days. You also need to check if there is any tingling sensation or not. In some cases, a wisdom tooth is very near to the nerve supply of teeth of the lower jaw. This also leads to a problem This can be relieved over a while with medication. If possible do post an X-ray of your teeth so that I can let you know in detail if there is any problem with the tooth.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
