What does a hard lump in the cheek after extraction signify?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got both my upper and lower wisdom teeth on one side removed five days before. I have another appointment scheduled in two days for the removal of wisdom teeth on the left side. The upper tooth removal was completely fine.

But they removed the lower teeth without removing the root as it was very close to the nerve. Currently, I have some stitches in that area on the lower cheek. I noticed a hard lump of about one inch between my lower jawline and cheek area. The lump is sore, hard, and tender. Is this normal and is it due to the swelling?

Currently, I am taking a tablet of Amoxicillin 500 mg and a tablet of Ibuprofen 600 mg. Please let me know what is this hard lump and also where this lump generally lies on the lower side.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

If the extraction was a tough one, it is normal to have swelling for four to five days due to some bone loss. Continue all the given medications for a week as suggested. If the pain or swelling does not subside even after a week then a new X-ray has to be taken to review the area. You can use warm salt water gargle twice a day for one or two weeks.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
